I read somewhere the other day about someone who had a wonderful and rather cool idea.  For the life of me I can't remember where I saw it.  If I remember I'll post the link.

The idea is simple but needs a little dedication.  If you're due to have a baby soon you could set up an email in your child's name and as they grow up you could send emails, pictures, videos, news, products of the moment, comments on current state of the art, recipes for their favourite childhood foods etc. charting their development and contemporary events in messages and images.  When they're old enough to appreciate it, tell them about it and hand them the keys!

It struck me that, while quite some commitment, it would be amazing to open up that email account at, say, 18 (is that too long?) and read the messages from your parents along side the current affairs of the time - a fabulous connection with your parents and a lesson in 18 years of modern history at  the same time.  I wish I'd thought of it for my four!

In terms of the provider it's probably best to choose an account with someone who's likely to be around along time - GoogleMail, HotMail, YahooMail for instance.  And you'd need to send clips of pages rather than links to pages because links and pages are getting deleted and changed all the time.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has done this or is going to do it.
